So, an owner who lives in their own $1 million home in Kailua Kona generally would have a tax rate of approximately $6150 a year, while a home of similar value would face an annual tax of nearly $24,000 in Jersey. The lowest tax rate is a homeowners rate of $6.15 per $1000 of assessed value. (In Hawaii, we don’t pay ANY vehicle property taxes) So, while we may endure the “paradise tax” across the board in the islands, it is worth remembering there are people who pay about eight times the property tax rate Hawaii residents do - and they live in New Jersey.
